Villa had led 3-1 in the game and thought they had secured what would have been a much-needed win but in the end they could only manage a point on Merseyside.

Paul Lambert's side, who are now without a win in eight Premier League games, got off to a dream start when Christian Benteke side-footed a shot into the bottom corner after just two minutes.

The goal stunned Goodison Park but David Moyes' side responded well with Steven Pienaar testing Brad Guzan with a low shot from 18 yards.

The Toffees equalised midway through the first-half when Victor Anichebe spun Ciaran Clark before driving a low shot into the back of the net, but they were level for just three minutes as Gabriel Agbonlahor sent a glancing header past Tim Howard at the other end.

The away side should have increased their lead after half-time when Andreas Weimann sliced high and wide from a one-on-one opportunity, but Benteke made no mistake on 61 minutes when he steered a diving header home from Matt Lowton's cross.

Fellaini put Everton back in the game eight minutes later with a low shot from 12 yards and Bryan Oviedo almost scored an equaliser moments later, dragging his effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.

It was a nervy end to the game for Villa and Guzan kept their lead in check with a superb reaction save from Sylvain Distin late on.

Paul Lambert's side looked set to hang on for the three points before Fellaini met Leighton Baines' corner in the third minute of injury time to send a powerful header into the back of the net.

The result took Everton into a two-way tie for fourth, the side below Tottenham on goal difference, while Villa remain in the relegation zone.
