The 31-year-old former England full-back fell out of favour with Villa boss Paul Lambert, who has now released him.

He had a loan spell with Bolton last year, but has not played for Villa since Lambert took over last summer.

He had been a target of West Ham, but it was Leeds manager Neil Warnock who offered the former Liverpool, Blackburn and Bolton man a two-and-a-half-year deal.

"He is a former international who, for whatever reason, has been allowed to leave Aston Villa," said Neil Warnock.

"He is a player I have tried to sign a few times before and I'm pleased he turned down West Ham to come here."

According to reports, Leeds boss Neil Warnock still has an interest in Birmingham winger Chris Burke and Zulte Waregem forward Habib Habibou.
