Paul Lambert's men entered the relegation zone for the first time this season after they failed to stage a late comeback against fellow strugglers Newcastle at Villa Park.
Lambert was under no illusions about the gravity of their situation, admitting the Villans are now in for a battle until the end of the season after Wigan earned a 2-2 draw at Stoke City.
"We are going to have to fight like hell to get ourselves out of it," he said after the game. "We are in a fight like everyone else. You have to fight for it. It's not going to get given to you."
The Villans were not able to complete a second-half revival after Christian Benteke converted a penalty four minutes after the restart to take the score to 2-1.
Lambert admitted they had paid the price for a poor first-half, but was still taking encouragement following their second-half showing.
"We paid the price for starting too slowly," he added. "We just never got going in the first-half. The second-half, that's the way to play football.
"But I couldn't fault them for the way they played in the second-half. It is the first time I've seen a standing ovation when you've been beaten, especially at home."
Aston Villa have now taken two points from a possible 24 in their last eight league games, and face a tough task on Saturday when they travel to Everton.
