The Toon Army had lost five of their previous six matches in all competitions, but goals from Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye ensured the three points would head back to Tyneside.

The Magpies took the lead after 19 minutes as Cisse smartly rolled his shot past the goalkeeper after being played through by new recruit Moussa Sissoko.

Cabaye then doubled the visitors' lead with a sensational shot into the top corner to give them a comfortable leading going into the break.

Christian Benteke managed to pull one back for Villa from the spot four minutes after the restart following Mathieu Debuchy's foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor in the area.

However, there was to be no way back for the hosts, who now find themselves in the relegation zone, below safety on goal difference after 24 matches, while Newcastle opened the gap between themselves and the bottom-three to four points.
