The result left the Black Cats 11th in the standings with 29 points from 24 top-flight matches this season, while the Swans are three places better off with 34 points at the midway stage of the season.

The game got off to a dramatic start as the Swans' Itay Shechter went down in the box following a strong tackle from John O'Shea, but referee Andre Marriner waved away the protests and the Blacks Cats breathed a sigh of relief.

The opening moments seemed to set the tone for the half with Michael Laudrup's men continuing to dominate, forcing Simon Mignolet into action on a number of occasions, but the Welsh side failed to find the net, with Nathan Dyer and Michu spurning good chances.

Whatever Martin O'Neill said at half time obviously worked for Sunderland as Stephane Sessegnon had two good efforts early in the second stanza, before Craig Gardner tried his luck with a free-kick but both failed to trouble Gerhard Tremmel.

However, it didn't take long for Swansea to start reasserting their dominance and substitute Roland Lamah should have broken the deadlock just after the hour, stumbling into the box but his effort was poor and easily saved by Mignolet.

The Swans continued to push for a winner and after some brilliant possession play in stoppage time the ball was moved wide to Ben Davies who crossed into Danny Graham but his effort was miraculously cleared off the line by Titus Bramble to ensure the game ended goalless.
