De Gea's weak punch against Tottenham that allowed Clint Dempsey to tap in the equaliser last weekend led to some intense criticism being aimed at the gloveman, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson ignored calls to drop the 22-year-old for the FA Cup clash with Fulham on Saturday.

The former Atletico Madrid star did not come under too much pressure from the visiting Cottagers as the Red Devils ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Coton told MUTV: "The criticism of De Gea has not just been over the top this week, it has been all season.

"Whenever a goal goes in they seem to point the finger at David. I hoped he would play, just to shut the rumours up that he had been dropped."

Coton feels that Ferguson should persist with De Gea as he sees no viable alternative, and says it's not as easy as some might think to attract players to Old Trafford.

"Over the years we looked at a lot," Coton said. "We looked at Buffon but there was no way we could get him. He just didn't want to come out of Italy.

"We tried to get Edwin van der Sar a lot earlier than we did but it didn't happen. It is not a matter of 'it is Manchester United, we must be able to get them'. There are certain situations when you can't."
