Ryan Giggs opened the scoring from the spot after just three minutes before Wayne Rooney doubled the lead five minutes after the restart.

Javier Hernandez then added a quick-fire double before Aaron Hughes managed a consolation goal for the Cottagers in what was an otherwise forgettable cup outing for the visitors.

The Red Devils came flying out of the traps and were awarded a spot-kick on three minutes when Aaron Hughes was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, Giggs making no mistake from the spot.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure but the scoreline remained unchanged for the remainder of the half.

However, United got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 50th minute when Rooney latched onto a pass from Anderson before firing into the bottom-right corner from inside the penalty area.

And they stretched further ahead just two minutes later as Hernandez converted into the bottom-left corner from Luis Nani's well-weighted pass.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 66th minute as Hernandez stroked home from inside the box, Giggs providing the assist this time around.

Fulham eventually managed to pull one back in the 77th minute through Hughes' headed goal from close range, but it was a case of too little, too late.
