Rafael Benitez has put Chelsea's failure to progress to the Capital One Cup final down to an impotent showing in front of goal against Swansea.

The west Londoners crashed out of the competition after failing to score in both their semi-final legs.

Benitez's men were held to a goalless draw in Wednesday's match at the Liberty Stadium following their 2-0 defeat to the Swans a fortnight ago.

"When you talk about this competition you have two legs, we didn't take our chances in the first leg and we didn't take our chances in this one," the Blues interim boss said. "We didn't start well but after that we had chances. We didn't take the chances and credit to Swansea because they did well.

"We had two or three chances that we could do better with, but we didn't hit the target. I think we had 15 attempts and we have to do a little bit better in attack if we want to change the game but unfortunately we didn't do it."

Benitez is now hoping to turn his attention to the FA Cup, with Chelsea preparing to travel to Brentford for their fourth round tie this coming weekend.

"We knew it was a difficult game," the Spaniard added. "Now we have another competition, we have another game. We have to do well and hopefully we can progress."
