Despite the Toon's precarious position in the table, they currently sit 16th on 21 points, the 23-year-old insists they will climb into the top half before the season is over.

"I don't think it is a concern at the moment. Newcastle is a massive club and while we are not in an ideal position at the moment, I think we can definitely finish in the top half of the table," he said.

"In the long term people talk about the top four in the Premier League and I think with the players we have got on board and the manager and his ideas, we can definitely close the gap, get in the top six and, in the long term, why not challenge for the title?"

Mbiwa, who captained Montpelier to their first league title in their 39 year history last season, admits the strong French contingent at St James' Park had a big influence on his decision to make the switch to the Premier League.

"The way the club has welcomed French players was a very big part of my decision," added Yanga-Mbiwa.

"There are a lot of French players already which is something that will definitely help me settle in more quickly."

Alan Pardew has been busy in the January transfer window and is looking to add to the singing of Mbiwa, and recent capture Mathieu Debuchy, with reports suggesting that Massadio Haidara, Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko are all close to a move to the North East.
