In-form striker Robin van Persie gave the Red Devils the lead on 25 minutes and they looked to be heading for a narrow win before Dempsey, starting in the absence of Emmanuel Adebayor, smashed home after a poor punch from goalkeeper David De Gea.

United got off to a good start, pushing forward in the opening stages but it was Spurs who had the first proper chance, as Jermain Defoe tried his luck from the edge of the area, forcing a good save from David De Gea.

However, it didn't take the Red Devils long to rediscover their rhythm and after a few forays into the Tottenham half, they took the lead with Van Persie powering a header home from Tom Cleverley's cross after 25 minutes.

The goal seemed to spark the home side back into life but despite a number of efforts, they failed to truly trouble De Gea and United held onto their lead going into the break.

Andre Villas-Boas' men carried their momentum into the second half and were unlucky not to equalise as Dempsey jinked his way into the box but his left-footed effort was miraculously saved by the young Spanish goalkeeper.

Spurs continued to come forward and Defoe was the latest to be denied with Rio Ferdinand diving across him to block his goal-bound effort when he looked certain to score.

However, the home side weren't to be denied as a stoppage time cross was curled into the box and after De Gea had struggled to punch clear, the ball fell to Aaron Lennon who coolly passed to Dempsey allowing the American to fire home and snatch a share of the spoils.
