Gerrard: Hoping for further additions

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard feels they need to sign "two or three big players" to mount a sustained challenge for a top-four berth.

The Reds romped to a convincing 5-0 victory over a poor Norwich side on Saturday afternoon, Gerrard getting in on the act with a trademark long-range drive.

The result moved Brendan Rodgers' men level on points with Arsenal ahead of Sunday's round of fixtures - three points shy of Everton, who travel to Southampton on Monday night.

While he is happy with the progress they have made this term, Gerrard believes the Merseysiders could benefit hugely from the addition of several experienced big-name signings.

He told the Sunday Mirror: "In general, I like the direction the club is going in, but the harsh reality is that we still need two or three big players who can help.

"We were short before the last deadline and I think we struggled to find consistency because of that."

And Gerrard says Liverpool should use league leaders Manchester United as a yardstick of measurement with regards to consistency.

He added: "I like the new manager's philosophy. I like his style of play. The gap between us and, say, Manchester United is now severe, but I believe that, on our day, we can beat any team in the league. What we need to find is that consistency.

"We can actually learn from United. There are games when they don't play well and they still find a way to win. When we don't play well, we don't win. We need to find a way to win games when we're not really at our top level."
