Harry Redknapp saw his side start brightly on his return to the Boleyn Ground with Adel Taarabt and Remy linking up positively in the early stages.

West Ham almost took the lead through two early chances for Kevin Nolan but Rangers found the first breakthrough after 14 minutes when Remy latched onto Taarabt's perfectly weighted through ball and fired a first time shot into the bottom corner.

It was the perfect start for QPR's record signing but he barely threatened Jussi Jaaskelainen's goal thereafter as West Ham responded well to going behind.

Marouane Chamakh, making his first start in claret and blue, thought he had won his side a penalty on the half hour mark under two challenges from Ryan Nelsen and Shaun Wright-Phillips inside the box, but Howard Webb waved away his protests.

The Hammers maintained the pressure after half time and QPR had to defend a 45-minute onslaught from Sam Allardyce's side.

Julio Cesar kept his side ahead with a series of world class saves to deny Joe Cole's low shot and a couple of close range headers from Chamakh.

However, the Brazilian goalkeeper was helpless for the 68th minute equaliser as he parried Carlton Cole's header into the path of Joe Cole who turned in the rebound from three yards out.

The goal is Joe Cole's first for West Ham in over a decade and earned a valuable point for the east London side, but ruined Remy's dream debut for his new club.

QPR remain bottom of the Premier League table while West Ham are overtaken by Sunderland and drop to 12th, eight points above the drop zone.
