Gunners manager Arsene Wenger had previously spoken of his optimism that the deal would be done 'by this weekend', but it seems the Frenchman will celebrate even sooner than that, as it appears a three-year deal between the club and player has been agreed in principle.

This brings an end to what has become a protracted contract wrangle between the two parties, with Walcott's commitment providing a welcome boost for Wenger in the New Year, and breaking the mould of high profile signings leaving the London club for pastures new.

Wenger has previously spoken of his desire to build this current Arsenal side around a nucleus of English players. Walcott will be the sixth and last of Arsenal's current senior British players to have recently recommitted to the club, following the likes of Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs.

The news comes as a timely boost for Arsenal, who take on bitter London foes and top-four rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
