Sunzu has been strongly linked with a move from his Democratic Republic of Congo club to England's top-flight, with Chelsea and Arsenal both having been credited with interest in the midfielder.
However, the Royals now look set to swoop in for the 23-year-old's services, with Sunzu believed to be set for a medical at the Madejski Stadium this week.
Katumbi told The Sun: "Sunzu is heading to Reading for tests after the agreement by TP Mazembe and the Zambia Federation.
"He just sent us a message in which he thanked the club."
Sunzu made history with the Copper Bullets at last year's Africa Cup of Nations final, scoring the winning winner against Ivory Coast in the penalty shoot-out.
