Walters: Amongst the goals

It was a miserable afternoon for Jon Walters as he scored two own goals and missed a penalty for Stoke City in a 4-0 thumping by Chelsea.

The big team news ahead of kick off at the Britannia concerned the visitors as Frank Lampard and Demba Ba started, while Fernando Torres was dropped to the bench after his horror show on Wednesday night.

Stoke began quickly but after Kenwyne Jones had missed the target when one-on-one with Petr Cech it all started to go downhill for the Potters.

Walters is normally Mr. Dependable for City but today was not his finest and it began just before the break as Cesar Azpilicueta's cross was headed beyond Asmir Begovic by Walters from point blank range.

Tony Pulis' side continued to struggle to make any sort of impact after the break and found themselves two down in similar circumstances when a corner was missed by Ba and hit the unfortunate Walters on the head and flashed into the net for his second on the hour mark.

The Potters were in disarray and, when Robert Huth felled Juan Mata in the box just two minutes later, it was Lampard who stepped up to slam home from the spot for 3-0.

Rafa Benitez threw on Torres in an attempt to boost his confidence as Stoke continued to toil, but the icing on the cake was added by Eden Hazard's 30 yard thunderbolt on 72 minutes leaving Begovic clutching at thin air.

Walters' misery was complete in injury time after Matthew Etherington was felled by substitute John Terry in the box and the striker stepped up to balloon his penalty kick into the stands.

The margin of victory will surprise many but Stoke were appalling throughout and it will be a timely boost for Benitez who has endured plenty of criticism from Blues fans after the midweek defeat to Swansea.
