Jay Rodriguez won the spot-kick after 33 minutes when he went down under the challenge of Enda Stevens inside the box.

Referee Mark Halsey pointed to the spot although there appeared to be minimal contact from the Villa defender and Lambert continued his 100 per cent record from 12-yards by sending Brad Guzan the wrong way.

It was an uninspired performance from the struggling Villans, who went into the game on the back of the shock midweek cup defeat at Bradford City as they failed to trouble Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc in the first half.

Paul Lambert's side improved after the break as Stevens and Andreas Weimann were both denied by Boruc but the away side were inches away from doubling their lead when Jason Puncheon's low left-footed shot came back off the post.

Villa dug deep late on but it was not their day in front of goal as Benteke squandered several opportunities around the penalty area before finally missing an open goal in stoppage time, while Stevens saw a header clip the top of the crossbar.

Young full-back Luke Shaw was stretchered off after 85 minutes but it was an otherwise good day for Nigel Adkins' Southampton, who move up to 15th place with their second away win of the season, while Villa fall into the drop zone behind Wigan on goal difference.
