The Argentina international picked up the injury during City's 3-0 Premier League win over Stoke on New Year's Day and was forced to sit out Saturday's 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Watford.

Aguero revealed via Twitter that the injury is worse than initially feared, but didn't say how long he expected to be out.

"The studies confirmed I have a torn muscle," he wrote. "We have to keep on thinking positive and try to recover in the best way possible.

"For that, I've travelled to Italy where a specialist is treating me. I'll keep you up to date in how the injury evolves."

Manager Roberto Mancini was hopeful the striker would be fit for next Sunday's Premier League clash against Arsenal, but the injury means he will almost certainly miss the trip to the Emirates Stadium.
