The centre-back was linked with a move away from the Britannia, with Manchester City and Chelsea having shown strong interest.
No-one was more thrilled with the news than Potters boss Tony Pulis, who could hardly contain his excitement when revealing news of the new deal.
Pulis told Sky Sports: "It's fantastic for us as a football club. We're really, really pleased to have him.
"He's been the bedrock of what we've been trying to do over the past five or six years and we're really pleased that he's finally agreed."
Shawcross moved to Stoke from Manchester United on loan in 2007 before signing a permanent deal with the club in January 2008.
He has been club captain for the last three years and played over 200 games for the Staffordshire outfit, his impressive form having earned him an England call-up in November last year.
He has scored 15 goals during his 190-game career for the Potters.
