The France international had been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside, following his impressive showing at Euro 2012.

And with the Magpies currently without their only senior right-back, Danny Simpson, who sustained a broken toe in the 7-3 loss to Arsenal, Toon boss Alan Pardew will be hoping to push through this deal as a matter of urgency.

Geordie fans got an early glimpse of Debuchy on Wednesday night with the 27-year-old in attendance for the game against Everton at St James' Park.

Pardew confirmed there are just minor details that need to be ironed out before Debuchy can sign for his ailing side.

He told the BBC: "It's just a question of the medical and a few details."

Pardew also stressed the importance of strengthening in key areas after seeing the Toffees come from a goal down to earn a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening.

"That position is a key position for us that we have looked to strengthen, and hopefully Debuchy's quality and experience will be much needed," he said.

"Because that is what we missed against Everton. Just a little bit more quality, a bit more experience in key moments."
