Alan Pardew's charges have failed to recapture the form last season that saw them end the campaign in fifth place.

They are currently sitting 15th in the Premier League standings, hovering just two points above the relegation zone.

Santon believes his side will improve in the second half of the season but insists new signings are key and vital to that aim.

He said: "It's not my job to sign players but the people in charge know what we have to do."

The Magpies have lost four of their last five league matches, conceding 15 goals in that period.

However, the 20-year-old defender remains positive and hopes Newcastle can finish the season in the best possible position.

He added: "Anyone who comes in must help us finish the season as best we can. We have to think positive and keep a strong mentality."

The Magpies might be forced into the market following rumours heavily linking star-striker Demba Ba with a move away from St James' Park, while midfielder Cheik Tiote will be on national team duty with the Ivory Coast during the Africa Cup of Nations.
