Having ended 2012 in the relegation zone it was vital for the Saints that they began 2013 well, but a visit from free-scoring Arsenal looked like a tough assignment for Nigel Adkins' side.

A promising start for the Gunners lost momentum once Gaston Ramirez started to get on the ball and the Saints fully deserved the lead given to them by their record signing just after the half hour mark.

A comedy of errors inside the Arsenal penalty area ended with Uruguayan attacking midfielder Ramirez coolly curling the ball past Wojciech Szczesny from the edge of the box.

However, the Saints did not hold onto their lead for long as they, once again, shot themselves in the foot.

Theo Walcott's free-kick looked like being an easy claim for Artur Boruc but Guly Do Prado slid in ahead of his goalkeeper and diverted into his own net to leave the sides level at half time.

There were chances at both ends in the second half, although the best of them seemed to fall for the visitors.

Walcott fired straight at Boruc from the corner of the box when he might have taken another touch to steady himself, while substitute Gervinho drove at the heart of the Saints defence but could only pull his weak shot wide of the near post in the dying minutes.

The Saints did see a goal controversially ruled out after Gaston Ramirez was adjudged to have pushed Laurent Koscielny on his way to smashing past Szczesny from close range.
