The opening goal came on 39 minutes when Patrice Evra's shot rebounded to Javier Hernandez, who fired home from close range.

On the stroke of half-time Robin van Persie doubled United's lead.

Hernandez found the Dutchman in the box and he showed great feet to step inside his defender before curling his right-footed shot into the far corner of the net.

The Latics thought they had a lifeline on 60 minutes when Arouna Kone fired home Franco Di Santo's low cross at the far post, but the goal was chalked off rightly for offside.

Hernandez bagged the third for the Red Devils moments later. Van Persie's free-kick struck the wall, but the Mexican striker reacted first and fired home in instinctive fashion.

Van Persie then compounded Wigan's woes in the dying moments. Danny Welbeck broke free in the box and squared for the unmarked hitman, who slotted home from close range.

The win sees United maintain their seven-point lead at the top of the table, while Roberto Martinez's side remain perilously close to the drop zone in 17th place on 18 points.
