Michael Laudrup's side dominated the first half at the Liberty Stadium and took an early lead when Wayne Routledge finished low past Brad Guzan from a one-on-one opportunity.

The Swans were inches away from doubling their lead on two occasions as Spanish hotshot Michu saw two efforts come back off the post and they were made to rue the chances just before half time.

Christian Benteke's threaded pass found Andreas Weimann who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

The hosts had strong penalty appeals turned down on the hour mark when referee Mark Halsey only awarded a free-kick after Joe Bennett handled the ball from Angel Rangel's cut back.

Villa were on the end of more generosity from Halsey with six minutes remaining when Nathan Dyer brought down Weimann inside the box and awarded the visitors a penalty, which Benteke coolly converted.

But there was late drama when Graham drove a shot into the roof of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time to deny Villa three much-needed points.
