The Blues had led the domestic standings earlier this term, but a dip in form in November allowed the two Manchester clubs, United and City, to overtake them, with the Red Devils opening up an 11-point lead over the west London giants.

Rafael Benitez's men do have a game in hand over the top two, and veteran playmaker Lampard, who scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Everton last time out, is determined to keep their good run going against QPR on New Year's Day.

"We do (have to win these games)," he told Chelsea TV. "That's the position we put ourselves in, because we had that funny run through November and December.

"We were top and all of a sudden we are adrift but you can't look back at that. We have to be positive now.

"We need to put a long winning run together. We have started doing that in recent weeks."
