Enrique: Another injury setback

The Reds have been in somewhat inconsistent form of late, beating West Ham 3-2 before losing to Aston Villa 3-1 at home ahead of a 4-0 drubbing of Fulham.

They were then 3-1 losers to Stoke on Boxing Day that was followed up by the 3-0 thrashing of Queens Park Rangers.

Although that leaves the Reds with three wins and 12 goals in five, the losses to Villa and Stoke will undoubtedly be a concern for boss Brendan Rodgers.

Jose Enrique was subbed off with a hamstring injury in the win against QPR and is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines along with Martin Kelly (knee).

Stewart Downing is expected to deputise for the Spaniard at left-back, but with Andre Wisdom due to return early in the new year, Glen Johnson could find himself back on the left sooner rather than later.

Fabio Borini is back from a long-term injury but is yet to resume full training with the squad, while Rodgers is set to be fully recovered from illness that kept him at home for the trip to Loftus Road.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have a similar record in their last five - two losses and three wins - but find themselves in 13th place on the table, five points clear of the relegation zone.

While Martin O'Neill saw his side beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats were unable to hold off Tottenham Hotspur and lost 2-1 on Saturday.

Titus Bramble is set to keep his place in the side after replacing the injured John O'Shea in the match against Spurs.

O'Shea joins Lee Cattermole (knee) on the treatment table while the trip to Anfield comes too soon for Wes Brown, who is still recovering from a knee injury.
