Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 last time out after their 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa. They had returned to winning ways following 0-0 draw to a battling Stoke.

And heading into their clash with the Royals, Andre Villas-Boas' side lead Arsenal and Everton by three points in fourth place.

The Berkshire outfit, in 19th place and some 23 points adrift of Spurs, finally picked up their second win of the season, 1-0 at home to West Ham, and will hope they can cause an upset in their first game of the New Year.

Gareth Bale missed out for the north Londoners through suspension after picking up a fifth booking against Sunderland.

His absence will open up a spot for one of Clint Dempsey, Gylfi Sigurdsson or more likely Scott Parker, who has made a number of substitute appearances since returning from injury.

Jason Roberts is, meanwhile, in contention for Reading after overcoming a hip injury that has kept him sidelined for the last five games, while Sean Morrison has recovered from an ankle injury.

But Brian McDermott is expected to keep faith with the same starting XI that did a job at home to the Hammers.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy remains a long-term absentee with a shoulder injury.
