Lambert: Bitter pill to swallow

Lambert: Still has belief

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert admits the 3-0 loss to Wigan was even more disappointing than the recent big defeats to Chelsea and Tottenham.

The Villans were looking to bounce back from the 8-0 humbling by the Blues and the 4-0 reverse to Spurs, but they shipped another three goals without reply on Saturday to sit perilously close to the relegation zone in 17th place.

The Latics moved to safety with their victory at Villa Park, and Lambert concedes the latest setback was the hardest of all to swallow.

"Spurs are a really good team and Chelsea too but there was a good chance against Wigan to break away," he said. "This was a side that came here with one point in six games and we are at home.

"That's the disappointing thing, when you are competing with everyone else round about you and you get turned over 3-0 at home, then it certainly hurts you, that's for sure. It's a hard one to take."

The home fans started heading for the exits before the hour mark with Villa already 3-0 down, and Lambert says he understands their frustration, especially after the 3-1 success over Liverpool prior to their three-game losing streak.

However, he is convinced the Midlands outfit will go on to retain their Premier League status at the end of the season.

"The fans since I've been here have been brilliant, totally fantastic with myself and the team, so I can understand," said the Scot. "The crowd will go away hurt like everybody else, so are we. I know we have to stick together, that's really important.

"This football club has been in a survival battle for the last couple of years. You're in a fight, but so are about eight other teams. Everybody is in a fight. The last three results have certainly hurt us, there's no doubt about it because everybody was all positive after the Liverpool game.

"But as soon as three results go against you, there's negativity, I can understand that. I can see that. But I've got the belief that Aston Villa will be fine."
