Pogrebnyak: Match winner

Reading edged to only their second victory of the season thanks to Pavel Pogrebnyak's early goal against an out-of-sorts West Ham United on Saturday.

It was a vital win for the Royals and they will not be too concerned that the match was far from a classic, with seven yellow cards littering an untidy and scrappy encounter.

The three points keep Brian McDermott's side in touch with the teams just above the relegation zone, but the Hammers must be concerned with their slide down the table as they have now accrued only one point from their last four matches, having last won against Chelsea at the beginning of the month.

The vital goal came in the fifth minute when Pogrebnyak latched onto a poor back-pass by James Collins before firing a low left-footed shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Sam Allardyce's side were dire in the first 45 minutes, with Carlton Cole an isolated figure in attack although Collins and Kevin Nolan did force Adam Federici to make smart saves before the interval.

After the break Cole headed Matt Jarvis' pinpoint cross wide and Federici denied substitute Jack Collison, but it was the home side that went closest to scoring when Jem Karacan hit the underside of the bar.

West Ham's best chance of grabbing an equaliser fell to substitute Ricardo Vaz Te who, after returning to action after a three-month lay-off with a shoulder injury, contrived to head wide of Federici's goal from a central position four yards out.
