John O'Shea fired the Black Cats ahead from close range on 40 minutes, but Spurs rallied well after the break as an own goal from Carlos Cuellar and a 51st-minute strike from Aaron Lennon sealed the win.

The home side started well but it wasn't long before Spurs started to dominate proceedings and they should have been ahead on 25 minutes, as Emmanuel Adebayor wasted a golden chance when one-on-one with Simone Mignolet.

Gareth Bale headed wide not long after and then on the half hour Adebayor missed a sitter, hitting the bar from inside the six-yard box after a Jermain Defoe mis-hit shot caused panic in the Sunderland defence.

Against the run of play the Black Cats went ahead on 40 minutes as a free kick fell to Steven Fletcher and his shot was saved well by Hugo Lloris, but the ball landed to O'Shea, who side-footed it home with ease.

A quick-fire double turned things around just after half-time, starting when Carlos Cuellar headed into his own net from a corner on 48 minutes.

Three minutes later and Lennon got the second for Spurs, capitalising on a loose ball to run through the home defence and prod the ball past Mignolet to complete the turnaround.

Defoe should have added a third for the visitors but Mignolet pulled off a wonder-save to deny him, while Bale was later booked for diving in the area when he was under pressure from Craig Gardner.

As the game came to an end, Adebayor was thwarted by Mignolet in a one-on-one for the second time in the game and as much as Sunderland tried to get the equaliser it was all in vain as Spurs left Wearside with all three points.
