The Reds have been hugely inconsistent this season, with the 3-1 defeat to Stoke on Boxing Day leaving the Merseyside giants 10th in the standings with more than half the season already completed.

And although he would not reveal the identity of those he feels are slacking, he nevertheless expects his squad to rise to the challenge of playing for a club of Liverpool's stature.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "It's not easily solved. It's not like other sports where you can just tell someone 'that's it' and show them the door and they're gone. This is a club that pays big money.

"I'm not saying that about anyone in particular, but it takes that bit of time.

"To play for a club like this there are certain requirements you need. They are not just technical and tactical requirements. You can't have a good match for Liverpool and then three days later have a poor game. This is Liverpool. This is every game of your life.

"You play well on Saturday and then you have to play well in the next game. Then three days later you have to be at the top of your game again. You have to do that for years because that's why you are at a big club. The table doesn't lie. We are in 10th position."
