Reports have linked the Blues with the 31-year-old forward, who has struggled to hold down a regular spot at Barcelona since his return from a broken leg.

Romeu, 21, who has been ruled out for six months with a cruciate ligament injury, revealed he would love to see a star striker like Villa arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Romeu told Spanish radio show Esports Cope: "I don't know what Villa's situation is, but if a great player like him comes, the record goal scorer with the national team, he would be welcomed and we would be happy."

Barca's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, however, claimed the club would have no intention of letting Spain's all-time top scorer leave the Catalan giants.

Villa's Blaugrana team-mate Andres Iniesta still holds hope that his Spanish compatriot will stay on at the Nou Camp.

"I don't know if there's a chance (he could leave), I don't think so, although for me personally I wouldn't like it if he did, because Villa is vital," the 28-year-old midfielder said.
