The Red Devils boss confronted referee Mike Dean, linesman Jake Collin and fourth official Neil Swarbrick prior to the start of the second half over Dean's decision to award an own goal by Jonny Evans, after Collin had initially disallowed it.

Papiss Cisse was deemed to be offside, but after a consultation between Dean and his colleague, the goal was awarded and the Magpies went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Ferguson was not punished for his actions on the day, and will remain unpunished after the Football Association confirmed he will face no retrospective action.

The United boss faced an anxious wait to see if Dean would report his rant to the governing body, but was left relieved after the referee omitted the incident from his report.

When asked about the incident after the game, Fergie said: "The referee changed the linesman's mind.

"He said it was an own goal. But if you see it again, and the referee can't see the guy is in an offside position, then he pulls Evans' arm.

"If that is not interfering what is? I think it was a bad decision."
