Gibson: Appeal later this week

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson is free to face Wigan on Boxing Day as his red-card appeal can only be heard later this week.

Gibson received his marching orders during his side's 2-1 win over West Ham on Saturday following a challenge on Mark Noble.

The Toffees have contested the dismissal, and with the Football Association requiring two working days to process the appeal, it means the Republic of Ireland international is eligible for the midweek Premier League clash.

However, Marouane Fellaini is unavailable again as he serves the second installment of a three-match ban for headbutting Sunderland defender Ryan Shawcross.

Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman, Tony Hibbert and Kevin Mirallas all remain on the sidelines through injury.

For the visitors, Gary Caldwell could come into contention at Goodison Park having shaken off a hamstring problem which kept him out of the first team in recent weeks.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez will also check on fellow defender Ivan Ramis, who has been struggling with a similar complaint, while midfielder James McCarthy is touch and go with an ankle injury.

Antolin Alcaraz (groin), Adrian Lopez (hamstring), Albert Crusat (knee), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Ben Watson (broken leg) will play no part as the quintet continue to be sidelined with long-term injuries.
