The Red Devils saw their march pegged back on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Swansea, with Michu notching up his 13th goal of the season for the Swans to cancel out Patrice Evra's opener.

That result allowed title rivals and bitter enemies Manchester City to close the gap at the top to four points after they had seen off Reading with an injury-time winner from Gareth Barry on Saturday.

Ferguson is set for a number of changes to his squad, with Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Darren Fletcher all expected to return to the starting XI on in midweek.

Full-back Rafael (hamstring) will be handed a late fitness test after missing the Liberty Stadium encounter.

The Magpies, meanwhile, brought an end to their three-game losing streak as they snatched a 1-0 victory over QPR on Saturday, Shola Ameobi scoring his third goal of the season.

The result took the Tynesiders to 14th in the standings, although they sit just five points above the relegation zone with half the campaign having been played.

Gabriel Obertan will be hoping to get a run out against his former employers having made his return from injury against Rangers.

But Check Tiote will be missing through suspension while Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Yohan Cabaye (groin) and Ryan Taylor (knee) are all out through injury.
