Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels his side's 1-0 win over Wigan on Saturday will give them the "belief and confidence" they need following a shaky start to the first-half of the season.

The Gunners have performed a remarkable turn-around this term following their worst-ever start under the French tactician, with the three-points against the Latics taking the London giants to third.

The result will also do much to ease the pain of their Capital One Cup exit at the hands of League Two Bradford, and Wenger was thrilled to have left the DW Stadium with a positive result.

"It was a difficult game but that will give us belief and confidence," Wenger told Sky Sports. "They went for us and it's a good result."

The result followed on from Monday night's 5-2 thrashing of Reading in the league, and while Wenger admits they were not quite as fluid against the Latics, he believes Roberto Martinez's men put up more of a fight.

"(Wigan) stopped us from playing," Wenger added. "We weren't as fluent and sharp as Monday. They had great desire.

"They are in the wrong position in the table. They have a very good midfield and their full-backs did very well."
