The Toffees started well and could have taken the lead in the 10th minute, an unmarked Sylvain Distin heading the ball into the ground and over the bar when he should have put it into the net.

Two minutes later the visitors thought they were ahead when Leon Osman had the ball in the back of the net from six yards, but the goal was ruled out, seemingly for Victor Anichebe impeding Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Everton were furious and were probably still complaining when West Ham went up the other end and Carlton Cole put the home side ahead, the striker driving the ball into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Cole could have had a second, rising highest to meet a James Collins free-kick, but couldn't direct his header on target.

Everton came out fighting in the second half and were ahead in the 64th minute, Anichebe powerfully heading home from Pienaar's cross.

Things got worse for the Hammers minutes later, goalscorer Cole getting a straight red card for a high boot on Leighton Baines which seemed purely accidental.

Everton were well on top after that moment and made the most of their one-man advantage, Pienaar grabbing their second after Osman's cross had caused a goalmouth scramble in the Hammers box.

Both sides could have scored in the last minute of normal time, Nikica Jelavic hitting the side netting from close range and Kevin Nolan seeing his effort deflected wide at the other end.

There was still time for more drama in added time when referee Anthony Taylor evened up the sides, harshly sending off Darron Gibson for a high foot on Mark Noble.
