The home side made three changes, with Michael Dawson, Steven Caulker and Gareth Bale recalled to the starting line-up, while City drafted in Ryan Shotton for Charlie Adam.

Kenwyne Jones was gifted an early chance for the visitors when Kyle Walker lost possession, but he was unable to hit the target from just inside the area.

Fourteen minutes in Jones went close again as his deflected effort was touched away by Hugo Lloris, with Matthew Etherington just unable to turn in the rebound.

The home side's best efforts came from long-range as Mousa Dembele and Gareth Bale let fly, with Spurs finding it difficult to break down a resolute City backline.

Spurs started the second half brightly, with Bale going close with a header from an Aaron Lennon delivery, while at the other end Shotton fired his effort straight at Lloris when he should have done better.

With just over an hour played City boss Tony Pulis opted to use all three of his substitutes in a bid to try and change things around.

Asmir Begovic collected a deflected Mousa Dembele effort right under his crossbar and then right at the death the Bosnian made a crucial save to ensure that the game ended goalless.

The visiting keeper got down quickly to divert a Gylfi Sigurdsson header away from danger after the Icelander met a fine cross from Bale.
