The Magpies entered the rain-soaked St James' Park encounter just two points above the relegation zone, but Ameobi's third goal of the season helped the Tynesiders move to 14th in the standings.

The R's, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, with new boss Redknapp seeing his four-match undefeated streak come to a screeching halt.

The hosts bossed the opening stages with Papiss Cisse heading just wide while Jonas Gutierrez could only fire over following a promising move in the final third.

The soggy conditions saw the flow of the game severely hampered, and although Newcastle continued to dominate possession, they lacked creativity up front and saw Demba Ba fire hopelessly wide from a free-kick, while at the other end no one in a QPR shirt could get on the end of Adel Taarabt's dangerous delivery.

Djibril Cisse looked sharp in the second period and forced Tim Krul into a decent save, while his namesake Papiss was wasteful from a corner after heading wide of the angle.

However, with just nine minutes remaining the Toon Army finally had something to cheer about as James Perch fed the ball through to Ameobi who curled a sumptuous effort into the back of the net.

Pardew's men almost snatched a second soon after, but Rob Green was equal to Sylvain Marveaux's shot and was able to make a decent save.
