The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker joined the Oriental outfit in the last January transfer period, but has failed to make an impact after scoring just three goals as his side finished the Chinese Super League season in ninth place.
Anelka, who was joined in China by former Blues team-mate Didier Drogba after he helped the west London club win the UEFA Champions League title last term, is now looking for an early exit.
"The discussion is between the club and himself, I don't know about the specific details," said Shanghai spokesman Ma Yue. "But so far we haven't got the final result."
Anelka has been tipped with a return to the Premier League, with QPR and West Ham reportedly after the Frenchman's signature.
