The France international has been hampered by the problem since last month's 1-1 draw with Maritimo in the Europa League, when he came on as a substitute in the first half.
Ben Arfa aggravated the injury on his return against Fulham a week ago and will likely be ruled out until the New Year.
Pardew is keen not to take any more chances with the 25-year-old striker and will give him the necessary time to recover fully from his injury.
"There is a danger he could tear his hamstring," admitted the Magpies boss, who saw his side lose 3-1 to Manchester City on Saturday, their sixth defeat in seven games.
"If he did that he would be out for two or three months whereas if we do it the right way and be sensible about it, it may only be three weeks. And obviously that is the route we are going to take."
