The Red Devils maintained their six-point lead over Manchester City, but having been three goals up against the Black Cats, Ferguson was alarmed to have seen Martin O'Neil's struggling side mount an attempted comeback late on in the game.
United were on the back foot for the last 20 minutes as the Wearsiders scored through Frazier Campbell and came close on several occasions to netting again.
"Sunderland could have had two or three towards the end; it could have been embarrassing," said the Scott, who was unhappy that his players lost their intensity for the final third of the match.
"For an hour we were fantastic. I don't know if we relaxed or Sunderland picked up the baton 20 minutes from time.
"They could have scored two or three goals. But Sunderland deserved a goal because they worked so hard for it. They had a lot of energy in the second half. They have a youngish team and kept going."
Going forward in attack, Ferguson has far less worries as he witnesses Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie continuing to form a devastating partnership.
"I don't want to pick out one player but Robin's movement was fantastic and always kept them on the back foot," he added.
"Wayne could have scored four goals today; he hit the bar and missed two or three in the first half. But he has got his goal and that is important for us."
There was, however, one positive in defence for the league leaders after Nemanja Vidic made a return to action, coming off the bench to finish the encounter at Old Trafford after three months out with a knee injury.
"I'm delighted Vidic is back - he's a warrior," Ferguson said.
