After the ecstasy of the last-gasp winner in the Manchester derby last weekend it was vital that the hosts capitalised on the momentum they had and they set about doing that from the first whistle.

Simon Mignolet had already made three saves to deny Van Persie, Rooney and Michael Carrick before United finally broke the deadlock on 16 minutes.

Ashley Young tricked his way beyond Carlos Cuellar and John O'Shea before cutting the ball back for Van Persie to settle himself and place into the top corner from six yards.

The floodgates looked to have been opened when Carrick played a delightful ball into the path of Tom Cleverley three minutes later and the England man curled a superb finish beyond Mignolet.

Rooney should have scored on two occasions as United threatened to run riot in the remainder of the first half, before the England striker struck the bar at the start of the second period.

Rooney finally got his reward just before the hour mark after Van Persie weaved his way to the byline and played the ball across for his strike partner to tap home.

United took their foot off the gas and David De Gea was called upon twice in quick succession to keep the three-goal lead intact.

However, there was nothing the Spaniard could do as Sunderland did grab a consolation through United old boy Frazier Campbell with twenty minutes to go.

The substitute rose unmarked to head home from two yards after the hosts failed to clear a corner.

There were chances for both sides as they game drew to a close but United were in cruise control as they went six points clear at the top once more.
