Mancini: Paranoid?

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini feels Mark Clattenburg was overcompensating when he reported Gareth Barry for inappropriate language last weekend.

City's Barry was handed a one-match ban after admitting to using insulting words towards Clattenburg, the fourth official during last Sunday's Manchester derby.

Mancini, though, believes the referee's actions were influenced by his own recent language row after he was accused of racially abusing Chelsea's John Obi Mikel.

And although Clattenburg was cleared of all charges by the police and the Football Association, Mancini suspects there was more to the match official's motives against Barry than meets the eye.

Mancini said: "Gareth is a serious man, a serious player and I don't know why Clattenburg said these things about him.

"I don't know if it's because he had this problem after Chelsea but I think every referee or fourth official should understand if a player uses inappropriate words after they have lost a game in the last second.

"I don't know if he said those words against Chelsea players. They decided not but this is another situation.

"This has come from Clattenburg. He should understand the situation, that is my opinion, but at the moment he doesn't understand."
