Ferguson: Pleased with win

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he would have settled for a draw before watching Robin van Persie net the winner in Sunday's derby.

It was an end-to-end spectacle in Eastlands where Manchester City came from two goals down to tie up the match, only for it to be snatched away by Van Persie's deflected free-kick in stoppage time.

The match was later marred by home fans throwing coins and other objects onto the pitch directed at United players, Rio Ferdinad in particular having suffered a facial injury.

Ferguson, though, was surprisingly humble following the weekend's victory which left the Red Devils six points clear at the summit.

"You have to give credit to City," he said. "They kept fighting and battling.

"They have this great record of scoring goals and when they got the second I thought, 'I will take the draw'."

However, the Scot couldn't pass up an opportunity to question the match officials decision to flag Ashley Young's second-half strike offside, which had it been allowed would've effectively killed off the game for City.

"It was disappointing because from 3-0 up it went to 2-1 in minutes," said Ferguson.

"Football can kick you in the teeth that way but there will always be controversy in a match like that because there are so many things happening."
