Despite a lacklustre showing, it looked as though Spurs were going to leave Merseyside with the three points as the game moved into stoppage time.

The Toffees, though, struck twice in the space of two minutes through Steven Pienaar and then Jelavic to come away with the win.

The hosts had the better of the encounter in the first half and squandered a string of good chances as Hugo Lloris made a couple of fine saves.

Both teams went close in the second half before Clint Dempsey gave the Londoners the lead on 76 minutes.

The American's speculative shot took a wicked deflection off Sylvain Distin and looped into the net past Tim Howard.

Gylfi Sigurdsson struck the woodwork with a curling effort soon after, but Everton continued to press forward in search of an equaliser.

Their efforts were rewarded on 90 minutes when Seamus Coleman's cross found Pienaar and the South African headed home to level against his former club.

Less than two minutes later the home side grabbed the winner. Apostolos Vellios' overhead kick was controlled by Jelavic and the Croatian finished calmly to break Tottenham hearts.
