Gerrard took over the captain's armband from John Terry and led the Three Lions with distinction on his way to racking up 100 international appearances.

The midfielder is joined on the list by defenders Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson, goalkeeper Joe Hart and striker Danny Welbeck.

Cole has been one of England's most consistent performers since making his debut in 2001 and despite feeling the pressure of Leighton Baines breathing down his neck, delivered some fine showings for his country over the past year.

Hart has made the number one jersey his own after a period of pass the parcel, with a reliable 'keeper having proved hard to come by in recent times.

While often criticised for being better on attack then defence, Johnson's all-round game and determination have made him an important cog in the England back four.

The 22-year-old Welbeck is not a name many would have expected to have seen a year ago, but with five goals in eleven games, the Manchester United striker has grown into a competent player at international level.
