The tough-tackling midfielder limped off during the Black Cats' 0-0 draw with QPR last Sunday, and immediately after the game O'Neill expressed his concerns but said Cattermole would see a specialist to ascertain the extent of the problem.
It has now been confirmed that his skipper will be sidelined for eight weeks, according to Sky Sports.
It comes as a big blow to a struggling Wearside outfit who are attempting to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.
