Luis Alberto scored the only goal of the game for the Romanian outfit who were worth their biggest win in their European history.

With qualification for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages already guaranteed, and Sunday's Manchester derby on the horizon, Ferguson made wholesale changes from the side that beat Reading last weekend.

Despite Tom Cleverley's injury a dampen on proceedings for United, Ferguson was surprising complementary of his team's performance on the night.

"Tom felt his calf a little bit," said Ferguson.

"We will assess it in the morning but it is not good news."

The Scot added: "The defence did their job quite well.

"I was pleased at the commitment and the composure was very good.

"But that doesn't solve the issue of defending. That was the future.

"On Sunday, the experienced players have to get their act together. It is as simple as that."

Having only recently returned to action after a bout of tonsillitis, Wayne Rooney retained his place in the starting XI in midweek, with Ferguson optimistic about the Red Devils striker's comeback efforts.

"Wayne has another 90 minutes under his belt and hopefully by Sunday he is in real top form," he said.

"He is approaching that now but Sunday will be a different kettle of fish altogether."
