Two goals from Demba Ba helped Newcastle secure a hard-fought victory over 10-man Wigan at St James' Park.
The turning point of the game occurred with only 12 minutes on the clock as Papiss Cissť tussled with Maynor Figueroa and the referee pointed to the spot.
As the last man the Wigan defender was given a red card and Ba stepped up to score powerfully in the right-hand corner.
The visitors had to battle one-man down for almost 80 minutes and their evening got even worse nine minutes later when Ba netted his second.
Davide Santon hit a left-footed shot that Ali Al-Habsi parried straight back out to Ba, who tucked away the rebound.
Sylvain Marveaux twice went close for Newcastle before the break and then yet again on 52 minutes, when his jinxing run into the area ended with Al-Habsi stopping his shot.
Moments later he played in Gael Bigirimana and his shot was also saved by Al-Habsi, however with 70 minutes gone the young midfielder wrapped up the result with the goal of the game.
He received the ball on the right angle of the box before cutting inside and hitting a curling shot with his left foot that arrowed into the top corner of the goal.
