First-half goals from defender Sebastien Bassong and midfielder Anthony Pilkington put the hosts 2-0 up after 37 minutes while a low drive from Craig Gardner just before the half-time whistle kept things interesting in the second half.

Backed up by their recent good form at home, which included wins over Arsenal and league leaders Manchester United, the Canaries started brightly and had an early shout for a penalty when Matt Kilgallon appeared to hold onto Grant Holt at a free-kick, but the referee waved play on.

It didn't take them long to take the lead, though, as Robert Snodgrass's free-kick glanced off the arm of Carlos Cuellar before falling to Frenchman Bassong, who stretched to get the ball into the back of the net.

The Black Cats struggled to get into the game and it was no surprise when Norwich went 2-0 up through a neat finish from Pilkington. After being set through by Bradley Johnson, the midfielder cut back inside before stroking it past Simon Mignolet's left hand and into the bottom right of the goal.

Sunderland, though, somehow managed to get themselves back in the game against the run of play. Adam Johnson beat two players on the left before laying the ball to Gardner, whose ferocious drive was too hard for Mark Bunn in goal.

The visitors put up a much better effort in the second half and Gardner's free-kick from 25 yards hit the base of the post, but Kilgallon missed from 10 yards out as he scooped it over the over.

Martin O'Neill thought his team were level with just over 15 minutes to play when Connor Wickham put the ball in the back of the net after a spill from Bunn, but the striker was off-side.

Sunderland managed to create a few more chances, but they were unable to get the equaliser and the result leaves them just one point above the relegation zone, while Norwich moves up to 12th place.
